Community Engagement

While working on both the research paper and presentation there were many things I learned about the center itself and society. My topic was about the lack of women within the center. I was essentially asking why this was so. I learned that the jobs the center provides are usually heavy labor which women may not actually do. But why is this so. Women have the same needs to support themselves and or family and need an income. If most of the jobs provided within the center are these kinds of jobs then women should be trained to partake in these job fields. It is found that there is a low percentage of women within construction and landscaping, but technically they can be a part of it. They have every ability to do these kind of work, yet its not done. Therefore if these are not the kind of jobs that women do, this is a strong reasoning as to why women may not necessarily involve themselves as much as men within the center.

Chapter 12

Since Day Worker Center is a non-profit organization it does rely on public entity.  As for the workers, the money the employers provide is specifically for the workers and not touched by the organization. Therefore the center does not and cannot interfere with the money the workers made themselves. This process affects CP because it does not profit its workers or employers rather it profits for the mission or purpose of their center. Others do not rely on the CP for funding because as for the workers or those involved in the center are provided with funds directly from the employers that are in need of the workers. This is beneficial because whatever the workers do in a day or work for they earn directly rather than having to worry if what they make will be affected or altered by the organization themselves.

Community Engagement Updates

My group and I went once again to the Day Worker Center in Mountain View and met with Maria. She was very helping in informing us much more about the workers. We also updated her about the project we were assigned which was creating a pamphlet and flyers. We have finished all and she has approved them as well. Now we will be distributing them to many places so workers will have the opportunity to join the center and be able to work safely. We also informed her about creating a packet for future volunteers. The packet will essentially be a informative guideline of what to do as a volunteer along with rules to follow. It will have the pamphlets and flyer that we have worked on and general information of what the center does. It will have ways to approach workers and what to say if help is needed or if they need more specific information. This will be made for Maria and she can go ahead and make copies for all the volunteers that way they will be easily informed and not take up too much of Maria's time since she is of course very busy managing the center but she does of course appreciate all the help she can get. We have been in great communication and looking forward to distribute these flyers and hope for a good outcome of workers to the center since there is a lot more work available but not enough workers to fulfill those jobs.

Blog Chapter 8

The Community Engagement partner that I am involved with which is Day Worker Center spends its money wisely. The workers are receiving money directly from their employers therefore they are receiving a fair amount of income that is not taken from the center. They dedicate their all to the workers by providing different classes such as English or even with technology. Providing such help can cost them some money but they see it as an investment to help improve the lives of the workers that way they can grow and develop a stronger knowledge for their jobs. This is a perfect example of Hallmark Seven which is "We develop Holistic Learning Communities Which Educate For Life." The center provides a learning environment to help educate and prepare the workers into the competitive job searching that is constantly advancing. Another Hallmark that is being pursued is Hallmark Three which is "We educate for and act on behalf of justice and peace in the world." The center wants to educate the workers so that they can understand and create a better future for themselves and their children, and that they may live a peace and comfortable life.

Community Engagement

Community Engagement we have at NDNU is really incredible. To have a specific day dedicated for all students to not only give back to the community but to our own university as well. My personal experience was great. I helped volunteer with the Political Science dinner that took place the same day as the Community Service day. It took myself along with other student weeks to plan but we were very proud of the outcome. Being able to represent and be a part of the planning feels satisfying and it was important for me to devote my time since it is my last year at NDNU. Next year I will no longer be a planner but instead a guest as an alumni. When students plan it next year I will understand the amount of work and dedication it took along with having to set up the location and cleaning afterwards as well. This is essentially general for anywhere one decides to volunteer their time because it takes dedication and commitment but once its done you feel proud of what you were a part of. It is helping the community and that is something anyone can feel proud of.

Day Worker Center

When arriving to the location of the Day Workers Center in Mountain View, it was interesting to see the environment in which the center is held in. The surrounding of the center is a nice neighborhood. Inside the actual center there were many workers both men and women. We arrived in the morning and everyone was gathered together drinking coffee, talking or playing card games to pass time until a job is needed for them. When we met with Maria the coordinator of the center, she was very informative about the center and the job that she provides. She works very hard and wants the workers to feel comfortable and needed as well. The workers were mostly men and some of different races as well. There are only a few people who work for the center but they make it work. Something interesting that Maria told us was that there are usually a lot more jobs but not enough workers to fulfill those jobs. Therefore it is our job as a group to reach out to the community and get more workers into the center. We are looking forward in helping the organization and excited to learn many new things from the center and people as well.

Day Workers Center

As a group we had experienced some difficulties with the different organization that we tried to reach out to. Luckily we were able to come together and figure out where we will all be able to get involved. A group member was able to find Day Workers Center in Mountain View which was very respondent and now we are scheduled to meet Saturday, March 5th. We will familiarize ourselves with the group and also work together to see what exactly we will be helping with. Overall we are working towards finally beginning our hours and hopefully soon begin our community engagement experience.
